5 Tips for Choosing Backgrounds for Your Custom Scrapbook Pages

snow-play-600-pixelThe background you choose is the backdrop for your custom scrapbook page. As a scrapbooker-for-hire I begin each page by selecting the backdrop that will make the photos stand out. The background is my canvas.

In Snow Play I wanted the blues and whites of winter to stand out plus I wanted the title to be in white, so I chose a textured black for the background. Next I picked blues and whites to say snow, ice, and winter and to tie in with the blue snow parka in the photographs.

Here are 5 tips for selecting your background:
1. Choose a background that complements the colors in the photos.
2. Decide what mood you want your custom scrapbook page to hint at. Generally warm colors represent upbeat, happy moods and dark colors represent more thoughtful or dark moods, but this isn’t always true. (I believe you can use dark backgrounds with bright embellishments to make a happy page and ensure your photos jump off the page.)
3. Think about your favorite colors then choose those favorite colors that work best with your photos.
4. Not sure what color to use? I recommend a neutral color like tan, khaki, white, or beige. Let the embellishments brighten your page.
5. Choose a color you love. As long as it doesn’t clash with the colors in your photos, you can’t go wrong!

I always begin my custom scrapbook-for-hire consultations with questions about color, scrapbook theme and what feel the custom scrapbook should have (whimsical, fun, serious).

Your background colors don’t need to stay the same for your entire scrapbook album, but it is nice to work with a palette of colors that look good together. Not sure which colors to use? Let your scrapbooker-for-hire make recommendations. I have a rainbow of colors to choose from to help drive my inspiration.
