My Favorite 5 Embellishments

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

I love embellishments! Embellishments make a drab page fabulous. When I do custom scrapbooking I plan the embellishments into each page. Sometimes they cover the page. Sometimes I place them in groupings. There is no right or wrong to embellishing. The key is to have fun.  My favorite embellishments are:

1. Ribbon–Yes, I save ribbon scraps!
2. Buttons–I am lucky enough that the two generations before me saved buttons!
3. Words (that capture the mood of the photo or layout)–you can clip these out of magazines or books, stamp them or a number of companies design tiny letters and words that you can use.
4. Brads and eyelets
5. 3-D items like rhinestone shapes, big brads and more

I’ve been an art docent for years and I have always told the kids that there are no mistakes in art. If you do something you don’t like, work with it. Sometimes those mistakes can turn into your best pages.

But if you are one of those who like the look but don’t feel comfortable using embellishments, hire a scrapbooker who does. I love to have fun making original pages that celebrate your favorite moments, from vacation scrapbooks, summer vacation scrapbooks, to making a Father’s Day scrapbook or a pet scrapbook. If you’re afraid to use scrapbook embellishments, I’m happy to use them for you!

Custom Scrapbooking Your Favorite Place

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Are you at a loss for scrapbooking inspiration? Do you want to transport yourself to another place and time? Custom scrapbooking a picture of one of your favorite places is a great way to do both.

In this scrapbook page I used one photo that captured the moment of my daughter visiting my favorite place for the very first time. I usually use a shabby chic approach to my scrapbooking and this page was no different. To capture the fun and whimsical moment I tilted the photo on the page then built the colors of the scrapbook paper and embellishments around the theme of happiness and summer. Of course I could not stop myself from embellishing the scrapbook page. (more…)

Green Scrapbooking . . . Vintage-Style

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

You can find scrapbooking materials almost anywhere. Just a few days ago I went to our local used bookstore and purchased some fabulous vintage scrapbook supplies: old magazines, postcards, and books that can be cut up and used in your scrapbook. You can create your own custom scrapbook with the books and magazines you find. I really like to use the older items from circa 1950 and before. Who knows, you might even find some great scrapbook inspiration. I picked up a great 1936 copy of Good Housekeeping and was delighted with all the inspiration and vintage ads, articles and artwork that I could not only use in my custom scrapbooks, but also use for inspiration.

Scrapbook Your Life

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Do you ever wish you had ideas for your scrapbook album? Fresh out of fun ideas? Why not scrapbook your life, but first turn to your book shelf or coffee table and use a book you’re reading or current magazine to find your inspiration. Maybe a chapter title or magazine article will be your next inspiration for a fun custom scrapbook page. For instance, maybe you spot an article called “5 favorite things to do this spring,” or “things to make you smile.” You never do know when the next idea will strike and I find that my stack of current magazines can give me lots of ideas. Sometimes, you won’t even need to open a magazine. Just scan the headline titles on the cover and make your way to your scrapbook studio!
